Lindy Hop originated in a time where there were many separations between black and white people in the American society. Lindy Hop made its way to Europe through International Trade shows and world exhibitions as early as the late 1920s and 1930s, and was also danced by American troops in Europe in the 1940s. Performance groups like the well known ‘Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers’ performed some iconic routines and also made their appearance in Hollywood films. In the 1930s Lindy Hop entered the mainstream culture and the dance really took off. Not long after its start a new wave of dancers including Norma Miller, Frankie Manning, Al Minns, Pepsi Bethel and Leon James took the dance to another level and introduced the iconic ‘air steps’ to the dance. In the early Savoy Ballroom days dancers like ‘Shorty’ George Snowden, Mattie Pernell, Big Bea, Leroy Stretch and Little Bea pioneered when Lindy Hop first emerged. Many talented dancers have influenced the development of Lindy Hop since its early start. The dance has different positions (open and closed) and steps. It used elements from African American dances and European partnered dance. Lindy Hop evolved from different dances, including jazz, tap, breakaway and 1920s Charleston. It is said the name Lindy Hop was inspired by aviator Charles Lindbergh who ‘hopped’ the Atlantic ocean in 1927. It was danced first in the famous Savoy Ballroom by African American dancers in 1928, and was danced throughout the 1930s and 1940s. It happens when our nervous system instructs the eyes to look in another direction. You can have someone else move your eyes or even do it yourself by pressing gently on the side of the eyeball with a fingertip on top of the lid. Wiggling one eye this way is not supported by the hardware of the eye and produces a very noticeable wiggly view of the real world. I mentioned subtracting out the motion going on in the visual system. Experiments suggest that something like this is happening. If a muscle paralyzing drug is injected into the eye’s muscles it causes a wiggly world because the intent to glance somewhere causes both an ineffective command to move the eye, producing no real movement of the image in the retina while the triggered corollary discharge subtracts the intended motion from the still image and causes a perceived motion (in the opposite direction). ![]() The bodywork remained similar to that of the previous R1, although a 3% reduction in the drag coefficient was achieved. Īt 127.8 hp (95.3 kW) at the rear wheel, top-end output remained the same, but changes to the engine management system were intended to result in a smoother, broader distribution of power. The dry weight was reduced five pounds to 414 lb (188 kg). Yamaha's main design goal was to sharpen the pre-existing bike and not to redesign it. In 2000, Yamaha introduced a series of changes to improve the R1, and minor changes to the bodywork to allow for better long-duration ride handling. Fuel tank reserve capacity was reduced from 5.5 to 4.0 L (1.21 to 0.88 imp gal 1.5 to 1.1 US gal), while total fuel tank capacity was unchanged at 18 L (4.0 imp gal 4.8 US gal). Improvements included a redesigned gear change linkage and an increase in gear change shaft length. The 1999 R1 saw only minor changes, apart from paint and graphics. The Yamaha YZF-R6 was introduced in 1999 as the 600 cc version of the R1 super bike. The exhaust used Yamaha's Exhaust Ultimate Power Valve (EXUP) system, which controlled exhaust gas flow to maximize engine power production at all revs, resulting in a high-power and high-torque engine. The instrument panel was electronic, with a self diagnosis system and digital speed readout. The R1 was also equipped with a 41 mm KYB upside-down front fork and 300 mm semi-floating disc brakes. Four 40 mm Keihin CV carburetors fed fuel to the engine. The swingarm could be made longer without compromising the overall wheelbase, which was a short 1,385 mm (54.5 in). Compacting the engine made it much shorter, allowing the wheelbase to be shortened as well and the center of gravity to be optimized. This "stacked gearbox" was followed by other manufacturers. Yamaha launched the YZF-R1 in 1998 after redesigning the Genesis engine to create a more compact engine by raising the gearbox input shaft and allowing the gearbox output shaft to be placed beneath it. ![]() ![]() A red and white version of the first Yamaha YZF-R1 model in 1998 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() QWOP featured at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in July 2011. Foddy says that he gets a lot of hate mail for making QWOP. Though the objective of QWOP is simple, the game, ever since it was released, has been notorious for being difficult to master due to its controls with the Q, W, O and P keys. The actual amount of movement of a joint is affected by the resistance due to forces from gravity and inertia placed upon it. The O and P keys work in the same way as the Q and W keys, but with the runner's calves. The Q key drives the runner's right thigh forward and left thigh backward, and the W key also affects the thighs and does the opposite. The Q and W keys each drive one of the runner's thighs, while the O and P keys work the runner's calves. Using only the Q, W, O and P keys, players must control the movement of the athlete's legs to make the character move forward while trying to avoid falling over. Players play as an athlete named "Qwop", who is participating in a 100-meter event at the Olympic Games.
